Almost Finished - page 3

Water Lillies

I really like the look of Water Lillies. It always amazes me how they can grow from the bottom of a pond, right up to the surface. Again, we didn't get a chance to see any of them in bloom this year because it was so late but I can't wait until next summer.

In this photo taken from the deck you can just see them in the center of the pond. One at about 9 O'clock, one at 12 O'clock and the other at 3 O'clock

Time For The Fish

I don't know how I contained myself for the week after the pond was finished. I could hardly wait to get fish into the pond. By all accounts that I'd read, I knew we couldn't add them until all the chlorine had dissipated. So, after a long hard wait, we rushed out and bought some fish. At first I bought two or three Comets from a place here in Lindsay, and then "Stubby" and I headed to Whitby to Vandermeer's Nursery where they have huge ponds full of Koi, and other beautiful fish. What amazing creatures these fish. They're beautiful, and some are fairly expensive. Anyway, we came away with six little Koi (three for me and three for "Stubby") and we headed on home.

One of the fish from the Lindsay store had a funny patch of orange on his head so my friend "Stubby" named him "Bill" after my good friend Bill at the police department. Bill, (the one at the police department) comes over on a regular basis now to check up on his namesake.

Koi?? Are You Sure?

Of course, I think you know the fish you're looking at in this photo aren't Koi, and they're not. These are some of the fish that we scooped out of my mothers' pond. We got about 15 Goldfish of varying sizes and colors from her. Half on them are doing great in their new home, the other half are over at "Stubby's".

Here they're splashing about, trying to push each other up onto the rocks. Must be some mating ritual I think. Sure was interesting to watch though.

Our First Visitor

It didn't take long after the pond was filled with water to see our first visitor. I'm not sure if this is a Dragon Fly or a Damsel Fly but it was a nice sight to see regardless. It's amazing really, we built this house sixteen years ago and I cannot recall ever seeing a a Dragon fly around here before.

Of course this wasn't the only one we saw. All day long they kept flitting about, running real close to the surface of the water. What were they doing I wondered. Getting a drink?, hunting for food? Who knows. It was just a lot of fun to sit quietly and watch them go about their business.
