Progress

The Bobcat (surely a back saver)

Here's Greg making great progress on the hole. It was thirsty work he says so I had to keep him well watered.

Notice how close he got that little crawler to the edge of the hole. I was constantly worried that he might slip in there, but after watching him for an hour or so I realized he new what he was doing and I didn't have to worry at all.

Dirt For The Waterfall

As he worked his way down into the hole, he piled some of the earth up at the end of the pond where the waterfall was going to be.

I had no idea at this point how to build a waterfall so I just got him to keep piling it there until it looked right. Turned out in the end that we used that pile of dirt to level the ground out around the edges of the pond instead of using it for a waterfall base.

Hauling It All Away

This is another friend, Sandy, who came to drive the machinery. After piling the dirt from the hole to one side, Sandy would come along with this huge backhoe and Greg would load the bucket with dirt. Sandy would then cart it up the road a short distance.

You can just see the big flatbed truck behind him that he used to bring the machines over to the house with.

Finished With The Bobcat

Wow!! That's it. All done. Well, for the big machinery anyway. Now the hard work begins. The pick and shovel kind of work. The hole is at the four foot level now and needs a lot of cleaning out. All the stones had to be pulled out of the dirt, some Cedar roots that were sticking out at the waterfall end needed to be trimmed back a little and a general good going over to make sure nothing else sharp enough to punture a liner was laying in wait. (more on that story later).
