Membership Guidelines
Membership in today's U.E.L.A.C. is available at several levels.
- Regular Membership, with voting rights in the Association, is
restricted to members who can prove they have a Loyalist ancestor who meets the following
criteria: Either male or female who, as of 19th April 1775, was a resident of the American
colonies, and joined the Royal Standard prior to the Treaty of Separation of 1783, or
otherwise demonstrated loyalty to the Crown, and settled in territory remaining under the
rule of the crown; or A soldier who served in a Provincial Loyalist Regiment and was
disbanded in Canada; or A member of the Six Nations of either the Grand River or the Bay
of Quinte Reserve who is descended from one whose migration was similar to that of other
Loyalists.
- Affiliate Membership may be granted to an applicant who can fully
document descent from a U.E. Loyalist ancestor, but cannot take the Oath of Allegiance to
the Crown. The same certificate that a regular member receives is presented to the
applicant except it contains the word Affiliate.
- Associate Membership may be granted to a spouse of a member, and
to any person who supports the aims and purpose of the Association who wishes to
participate in the Association's activities.
- Dual Membership: Any member in good standing, may join another
Branch or Branches at any time upon paying any fees required by the new branch.
- There is no age restriction for membership in the Association.
Infants and children are welcome as members. Generally, the parent or legal guardian will
take the Oath of Allegiance with the Oath being taken by the member upon reaching the age
of 18 years.
Any descendent of a UEL may use the letters UE (Unity of the Empire) after their name as
per Lord Dorchester's Order-in-Council of 1789. This proclamation was bestowed on both
male and female descendents and is the only hereditary honour in Canada.
To gain Regular Membership, and a certificate, you must prove lineal descent from an UEL.
